Since April 2003, Michael Wereschagin has been a reporter at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review covering metropolitan, state and national news. Michael has seen the aftermath of numerous national disasters. He has been dispatched to cover stories including the 2006 Sago Mine explosion in West Virginia, which killed 12 coal miners; the murder of five Amish girls in a one-room schoolhouse later that year; the Virginia Tech massacre; and the I-35W Bridge collapse in Minneapolis. In addition, he was part of a team of reporters covering the April, 2009 murder of three Pittsburgh Police officers, and another that covered the August, 2009, shooting rampage at a health club in suburban Pittsburgh that claimed four lives.
His investigative work includes a series of stories on unsolved homicides in predominantly African-American neighborhoods, the dramatic behind-the-scenes maneuvering that preceded the repeal of a controversial pay raise Pennsylvania state legislators gave themselves in 2006, and the rapid growth of the state Legislature's spending on itself during the last 30 years. Before joining the Tribune-Review, Michael worked as a stringer for the Harrisburg Patriot-News and as editor-in-chief of The Minnesota Daily, student-run newspaper at the University of Minnesota with a circulation of 35,000. The Princeton Review named The Minnesota Daily the best college newspaper in America that year.
He lives with his wife, Neva, in the North Side of Pittsburgh, PA.
David and Mike’s outstanding work as journalists has been recognized by local, state and national awards and presentations. They were among the co-writers of Forging Ahead: Pittsburgh at 250, a history of the city and region released in 2008 by the Tribune-Review Publishing Company.
